A slab made in a continuous casting machine travels along a roller track until it is located under flame cutting burners. A transverse conveyor is then used to move the slab sideways until it touches a limit stop, which is fixed on a roller disc. The sideways movement of the slab then rotates the disc through an angle to establish a reference line along which burners travel to cut the slab. The disc is pref. mounted on the end of a lever lifted by a work cylinder so it is in frictional contact with the slab. The invention can also be used to align flat rolled plates prior to flame cutting.
