A method of feeding granular material into fluidised bed reactors consists of introducing the material above a region of the perforated bottom plate where the upward ascent of the fluidising gases is reduced or entirely prevented. Pref. the perforated plate has zones where the gas permeability is reduced or entirely absent, th the bed material being introduced in these zones. Pref. conical, pyramid-shaped or prismatic components may be mounted above the perforated plate to inhibit the upward flow of the gas in these local zones. Process is partic. useful for where fine granular material introduced into a fluidised bed is subjected to the risk of being blown out of the bed before the required reaction, such as combustion, has been fully completed. A typical application is in the fluidised bed combustion of pulverised coal.
