The present invention relates to a polymer comprising an N-vinyl amide monomer and a dual functional monomer. In the case where the dual functional monomer incorporates a glycidyl acrylate, a third polymerizable monomer is also included. The polymer can be varied in charge.

Q-R-Ewhere Q is an oxirane, oxetane, aziridine, oxazoline, or benzoxazine, E is a polymerizable functionality containing a carbon-carbon double bond and R is aliphatic and/or aromatic moiety with or without a heteroatom, with the proviso that when the dual functional monomer is GMA, the N-vinyl amide monomer is neither VP nor VCL.
