A method for staining a substance capable of binding silver and which is supported in a matrix, comprises equilibriating the substance in an aqueous silver salt solution; rinsing the substance in water; treating the substance with a reducing solution; and immersing the substance in a first and then a second, aqueous carbonate or sulfate salt solution. The substance may be proteinaceous or a polypeptide. Prior to equilibration, the substance may be fixed, and washed in a mildy acidic alkanol solution. For use in the method, a kit comprises a plurality of containers each containing a reagent selected from a silver salt, a base solution, borohydride, an aldehyde solution and carbonate or sulfate salt. |
