The invention relates to a process for producing high-quality leather and animal hair from raw hides whose hair is suitable in particular for processing in the textile industry. According to the invention, the advantageously defleshed raw hides to be treated are pretreated in the hydrated state in a non-swelling acidic pickle broth or in a bran or groats pickle at 20-30 DEG C for 6-48 hours and then, after an optional neutralising or alkaline treatment, exposed in a new bath to the action of hair-loosening enzymes until the hair loosens, then the hairs are removed from the hide, washed out and dried, and the pelt is after liming subjected to further known operations. This process is mainly for the treatment of sheep, rabbit and goat skins. The quality of the hairs remains intact, and the skin part too of the raw hides can be used for the leather industry.
