An electromagnetic drive is proposed which is used for operating, for example, a valve or a feed pump. The drive comprises two soft-iron cores which are arranged at a distance from one another and concentrically with respect to one another and are each surrounded by a winding. A soft-iron cylinder which can move to and fro (in a reciprocating manner) is arranged between the two cores, and the two cores are connected to one another via a magnetic return path. The cylinder is surrounded by an annular guide which is magnetically conductively connected to the return path. In order to increase the power which can be achieved using the drive and to make it linearly dependent on the excitation current, the guide ring consists of a magnetically hard material and is preferably magnetised radially. <IMAGE>
