In order to develop a charge image (7) which is deposited on a dielectrically coated image carrier (1), the image carrier (1) is wetted with a liquid developer (8) consisting of a dispersant and toner particles. By means of the charge image (7), a portion of the toner is bonded, in terms of the image, on the surface of the image carrier (1). The remaining toner must be removed to avoid producing any background toning. In addition, the amount of dispersant which remains on the image carrier (1) is intended to be only as much as is required for the further treatment of the developed charge image (7) to be carried out correctly and quickly. For this purpose, a deposition (precipitation, separation) device (3) is provided which is moved relative to the image carrier (1) and whose surface just still dips into the liquid developer (8) which is deposited on the image carrier, so that a portion of the dispersant contained in the liquid developer is removed, for example by adhesion. In addition, an electrical field (14) is applied between the deposition device (3) and the image carrier (1). The direction of this electrical field (14) depends on the charge of the toner which is used in the liquid developer (8).
