The self-propelled lift is designed to climb straight, tapered circular or polygonal cross-section columns, in order to carry out regular maintenance. It uses a pair of diabolo-shaped, vertically offset, independently driven wheels (1,2) which straddle the column. The weight distribution of the lift provides a couple which pushes the wheels against the column. - The wheels together with the reduction motors (6,12) are mounted on a chassis (4), which extends (13) behind the lower wheels (1) to locate a basket seat, for tools etc. The speed of the upper wheel may be controlled to regulate descent speeds. A transmission system incorporating bevel gears (5,9), and a screw (8) is used to effect a variation of the wheel spacing when the lift travels on a tapered column.(1/2)
