The invention relates to a rack and pinion mechanism, in particular a rack and pinion steering gear for motor vehicles, a pinion which drives a rack being coupled to a spur gear mechanism which varies the transmission ratio. The spur gear mechanism is formed by at least two cylindrical gear wheels mounted eccentrically and elastically and this is advantageous in terms of its operation and manufacturing costs. To obtain a favourable overall transmission ratio, a transmission stage with a constant transmission ratio is connected to the input of the spur gear mechanism.
