NEW MATERIAL:2-Dimethylamino-6-methylaminopyridine. USE:An intermediate of compounds useful as pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals, etc. For example, o-4-chloro-3-methylphenyl N-methyl-N-(6-dimethylamino-2-pyridyl)thiocarbamate synthesized from 2-dimethylamino-6-methylaminopyridine is suitable as a herbicide for paddy field exhibiting excellent herbicidal activity against various weeds such as cockspurgrass, etc. and harmless to transplanted paddy rice plant. It has selective herbicidal effect between the gramineous weeds and broad-leaved crops, and is useful also a herbicide for plowed land. PREPARATION:The titled compound can be prepared, e.g. by reacting 2-halo-6- methylaminopyridine of formula I (X is Br or Cl) with dimethylamine or reacting 2-halo-6-dimethylaminopyridine of formula II with methylamine.
