NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (X is 2-naphthyl, 5-indanyl, 5,6,7,8- tetrahydro-2-naphthyl, phenyl bearing lower alkyls; Y is O, S; R1 is H, nitro; R2 is lower alkylamino). EXAMPLE:4-tert-Butylphenyl N-methyl-N-(6-dimethylamino-2-pyridyl) carbamate. USE:Herbicide: it is suitably used in water-filling treatment in rice paddies at the stage of Pre-emergence of weeds. It shows excellent herbicidal effect against various kinds of weeds including barnyard grass without injury to transplanted rice. PREPARATION:The reaction of a phenol derivative of formula II (A is H, halocarbonyl, halothiocarbonyl) with an aminopyridine derivative of formula III (B is halocarbonyl, halothiocarbonyl, when A is H, and H, when A is a group other than H) is carried out in the presence of a dehydrohalogenation reagent, when necessary, in a solvent to give the compound of formula I .
