PURPOSE:To synthesize diamond of high quality with an inexpensive apparatus by allowing a carbonaceous starting material to coexist with a catalyst at a temp. above the m.p. of a system consisting of the material in a nonoxidizing state and by discharging the resulting melt from pinholes into a nonoxidizing atmosphere kept at the same temp. CONSTITUTION:Powdered graphite and a powdered catalyst are filled into a heat-resistant autoclave under pressure, and the autoclave is allowed to stand in a nonoxidizing atmosphere in a hydrogen furnace, a vacuum furnace or the like kept at a temp. above the m.p. of a system consisting of said materials. The graphite coexists with the catalyst in the autoclave contg. no oxygen. After the lapse of a fixed time, the clogged pinholes of about 0.1-10mm. diameter in the autoclave are opened to discharge the resulting melt in the autoclave. Diamond particles are produced and deposited on solid metallic or ceramic members placed in the furnace. The diamond particles are recovered with aqua regia or the like. |
