PURPOSE:To readily obtain a polyethersulfone-based novel polymer of high heat resistance and molding processability, by performing reaction, in a specific maner, between thiobisphenol alkali metal salt, speficic sulfone derivative and methylene halide. CONSTITUTION:A reaction is carried out in a solvent between (A) m mole of thiobisphenol alkali metal salt of formula I (M is alkali metal) and (B) n mole of bis(halogenophenyl) sulfone of formula II (X is halogen) (where, m and n are each integer satisfying the following equations: m=k+l, n=k, 0.6<=k/k+l <=0.98). Subsequently, (C) >=(m-n) mole of methylene halide of formula CH2X2 is made to react with the resulting product to form a second product, which is then treated with water, thus obtaining the objective polymer having k units of formula III and l units of formula IV, with terminal group being H, OH or of formula V, also having a reduced viscosity (determined in the form of 0.2g/dl N-methylpyrrolidone solution at 30 deg.C) >=0.1dl/g.
