PURPOSE:To improve the oblique resolution of a solid-state image pickup device which makes a field read and suppress return distortion by using a color filter which has high light utilization efficiency and serves as a longitudinal stripe filter by the field read. CONSTITUTION:Specific numbers of areas (a)-(f) of 3X2 picture elements are arrayed as unit areas 7 horizontally and vertically to constituted the color filter 1. This filter serves as the longitudinal stripe filter by the field read, and trasmitted color light of each picture element ares is so selected as to obtain edge components from the entire surface of the unit areas 7 and also obtain complementary color components from at least two of picture element areas (a)-(f). The odd-numbered lines (n), (n+1)... or the color filter 1 are set to white light W as transmitted color light, and the even-numbered lines 263+n, 263+n+ 1... are set to yellow light Yl, white light W, and cyan light Cy horizontally as transmitted color light. Thus, this filter is equivalent to the longitudinal stripe filter during field reading operation.
