PURPOSE:To form a fine striped pattern similar to straight grain of wood by etching an Al alloy plate contg. a specified amount of V, Cr or B and a specified amount of Mn as essential components or further contg. Cu and by carrying out chemical polishing or electropolishing as required. CONSTITUTION:An Al alloy contg. 0.5-2.5% V, 0.5-2.5% Cr or 0.5-2.0% B and 1.0-1.8% Mn as essential components or further contg. 0.02-0.3% Cu is cast into an ingot. This ingot is homogenized, hot rolled, and cold rolled. The resulting Al alloy plate is etched by 0.25-0.70g/dm<2> extent of dissolution by treatment with an aqueous NaOH soln. having 20% concn. at 45 deg.C for 5min to form a fine striped pattern similar to straight grain of wood on the surface of the plate. The striped pattern may be made bright by chemical polishing or electropolishing so as to improve the decorative effect.
