PURPOSE:To reduce a delay time by changing the capstan operation in a device having a delay time at the reverse of tape running direction. CONSTITUTION:When a signal requesting the reversing of the running direction comes at a point P when the tape running direction is reversed (CW CCW), the capstan 2 continues the turning in the CW by T1 from the point P and then reversed to CCW after the time T1. On the other hand, since ''REEL CONT'' goes to logical L by T2 from the point P, a CCW direction current flows to a motor 6 and the motor 6 is decelerated. Through the control like this, a tape loop continues descending for the T1 from the point P and when the capstan 2 is inverted at the T1, the loop continues elevating. Since the control restores to the normal control after the T2, when the T2 is selected that the turning of the motor 6 is nearly ''0rpm'', after the control restores to the normal control, the fluctuation of the tape loop is the same as that started toward the CCW from the state of stopping at the point (a).
