PURPOSE:To improve the read accuracy by slowing a carrying speed of a bankbook, etc., and reading again a page code pattern, in case a data read a pattern of the bankbook, etc. is not a regular code pattern. CONSTITUTION:When a bankbook 2 is inserted into an automatic cash depositing and paying machine, a page code 1 is read by an image sensor 18. This read operation is executed two times, the previous read result and the present read result are compared, and if both of them do not coincide, it is decided that some error has been generated, and a computer 16 instructs to slow a carrying speed of the bankbook 2, to a driving part 17. In this way, read of the page code 1 of the bankbook 2 is executed exactly.
