PURPOSE:To obtain the titled composition capable of forming dry film of high water repellency, for coating on paper, knits, leathers, etc., by incorporating a small amount of water repellant in an aqueous dispersion of polymer prepared by emulsion polymerization in the presence of an alkali salt aqueous solution of specific copolymer. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition can be obtained by incorporating aqueous polymer dispersion prepared by polymerization of (A) 100pts.wt. of a monomer consisting mainly of hydrophobic radically polymerizable unsaturated compound in the presence of (B) 1-20pts.wt. on a dry basis, of an alkali salt aqueous solution of carboxyl group-contg. copolymer with [eta]<=0.3 (measured at 25 deg.C in the form of dimethylformamide solution) capable of forming water- repellent dry coating film and 0-3pts.wt. of a low-molecular weight surfactant with (C) 0.1-10wt%, based on said dispersion (B), of a nonvolatile water repellant.
