PURPOSE:To produce the titled optical fiber which can be used for a long period without causing the breakage, in high efficiency, by applying molten metal to the outer circumference of an optical fiber heated in an inert gas atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber 1 is introduced into a furnace 3 which is supplied with inert gas 4 and heated at <=500 deg.C, heated to decrease the temperature difference between the optical fiber 1 and molten metal, and introduced into a metal dipping zone 2 to effect the coating of the optical fiber with molten metal. A complete coating can be attained even if the thickness of the coating metal is thin.
