PURPOSE:To yield the titled polyimide resin with a high thermal decomposition temp., by a method wherein 3,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether and arom. tetracarboxylic acids are heated in an org. solvent and subjected to polyimide formation in a one-stage process while removing water. CONSTITUTION:About equimolar 3,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether and arom. tetracarboxylic acids (e.g., pyromellitic dianhydride or 3,3',4,4'- benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride) are added to an org. solvent (e.g., p-chlorophenol or p-bromophenol). Then, the mixture is heated to a temp. of about 100-200 deg.C and subjected to polyimide formation in a one-stage process while removing water to yield the intended polyimide resin soluble in org. solvents. Furthermore, 3,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether and 30mol% or below other arom. diamine (e.g., 3,3'-dichlorobenzidine) may be used in combination.
