PURPOSE:To form L-glutamic acid in a culture solution, and to collect it in high yield, by cultivating a bacterium belonging to coryneform bacteria, capable of producing glutamic acid, having extremely reduced ability to grow in lactic acid as only one carbon source, in a nutritive medium. CONSTITUTION:A bacterum such as Corynebacterium glutamicum X-14 (FERM P-7983), etc. belong to coryneform bacteria, capable of producing glutamic acid, having extremely reduced ability to grow in lactic acid as only one carbon source, is cultivated in a nutritive medium. The bacterium is cultivated in a medium containing a carbon source, a nitrogen source, an inorganic slat, etc. under an aerobic condition. After the fermentation is over, L-glutamic acid is isolated from a fermented solution by a well-known solution.
