PURPOSE:To obtain stably a fine particulate rubbery chlorinated polyolefin, by using a combination of a maleic acid polymer and an anion-active styrene polymer as a dispersant in chlorinating a powdered polyolefin in an aqueous suspension. CONSTITUTION:In the chlorination of a powdered polyolefin in an aqueous suspension, a combination of a homopolymer of maleic anhydride or maleic acid or a copolymer thereof with methyl vinyl ether with an anion-active styrene polymer having sulfonic acid groups is used as a dispersant. Examples of said anion-active styrene polymers used include polymers of a MW of about 6,000-100,000 formed by copolymerizing styrene with an alkali metal styrenesulfonate or copolymerizing styrene with other comonomers and an alkali metal styrenesulfonate. Examples of said comonomers include maleic anhydride, alpha-methylstyrene and acrylic acid.
