PURPOSE:To enable a head to be positioned in a short time to a non-recorded position by positioning a head after shifting it a prescribed quantity in a prescribed direction from a position whereat the presence of the record is firstly detected by a reverse movement. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic disk 2 is rotated by a motor control circuit 89 so that the disk is not injured by a system controller 91 during the movement of the head 5. Simultaneously, a step motor drive circuit 87 is controlled so that the head 5 is moved in the direction of X towards the central position of the disk until it is stopped at a last number track position. Then the head 5 is moved in the direction opposite to the direction X while a changeover switch 86 is switched to a contact C to start the operation of a record presence/ absence detector 85. By responding to the first output H responsive to the record presence from the circuit 85, the controller 91 controls a circuit 97 to stop the head 5, then to move the head by one track in the X direction for positioning the head. Hence, the head can be positioned to a non-recorded track surely in a short time irrespective of the erased track, etc.
