PURPOSE:To make it possible to automatically sort veneers, right and left, which are successively transferred, into groups of veneers having predetermined lengths, by providing a laterally moving changeable member for obliquely moving veneers toward the guide surfaces of cut face guide mechanisms on both sides of a transfer conveyor and for making the cut face of each veneer abut against each of the guide surfaces. CONSTITUTION:There are provided cut face line-up mechanisms 4, 4a for lining up both cut faces of veneers A at suitable positions on a transfer conveyor 1. Right and left cut face guide mechanisms 10, 10a are laid on both sides of the conveyor 1 downstream of the line-up mechanisms 4, 4a, with a space therebetween while is wider than the fibrouswise width of the veneers A. Right and left laterally moving members 16, 16a each vertically moving between the acting position where the veneers A is obliquely moved toward each guide surface 14, 14a and then upper waiting position, are arranged at substantially the same position in the transfer direction of the transfer conveyor 1 inward of the right and left cut face guide mechanisms 10, 10a. These laterally moving members 16, 16a are alternately changed over to vertically move at every predetermined distance in the transfer direction by a lift control mechanism 24, thereby it is possible to sort, right and left, and veneers which are successively transferred, into groups of veneers having predetermined lengths.
