PURPOSE:To obtain a medium which has high mechanical strength and is less deteriorated in magnetic characteristic by external distortion by limiting the range of the component compsn. for a high permeability layer. CONSTITUTION:The high permeability layer of the vertical magnetic recording medium provided with the vertical magnetic layer on the high permeability layer provided on a nonmagnetic material 1 is constituted of a magnetic alloy consisting substantially of 75-85wt% Ni, 1-14wt% Nb and the balance Fe. The vertical magnetic recording medium which has the higher mechanical strength than a recording medium consisting of an Ni-Fe alloy and is less deteriorated in the magnetic characteristic by the external distortion is thus obtd.
