PURPOSE:To reduce an amount of air consumed and to prevent the occurrence of failure in reverse shifting control, by a method wherein, through detection of the change in rotation in a reverse direction of an engine, high pressure compressed air is introduced from an air tank for exclusive use to a piston through selection of a timing. CONSTITUTION:With a selection switch 7 actuated, a check type electromagnetic valve 3 is opened. On receipt of a signal from a reverse lever 12, an opening instruction is oscillated from a control panel 6 to a relay valve 10 to open a starting valve 9. This causes introduction of compressed air from a compressed air tank 1 to a piston 8. Thus brake is applied, a forward speed is decreased, and when rotation is started in a reverse direction in due couse, a signal from a rotation speed sensor 5 is inputted to the control panel 6, and a check type electromagnetic valve 4 is opened so as to match a time at which maximum torque is needed. This causes introduction of the compressed air from a compressed air tank 2 to the piston 8 to increase a rotation speed to a value at which reversing is conduced.
