PURPOSE:To obtain the title magnetic recording medium having excellent integrated performance, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, etc., by forming a thin film of an oxide layer of CO or a Co alloy by physical vapor deposition on a metallic thin film magnetic recording layer. CONSTITUTION:A film 23 which is rewound from a rewinding roll 22 and on which a metallic thin film magnetic recording layer has already been formed is passed on a free roller 22, rotated along the outer periphery of a can 24 and wound on a winding roll 26 through a free roller 25. Meanwhile, a vapor deposition substance 28 of cobalt or a cobalt alloy contained in a crucible 29 is melted by an electron beam 30 radiated from an electron gun 31. The vapor flow is passed through an opening part of a deposition preventive plate 27 while introducing gaseous oxygen from a gaseous oxygen from a gaseous oxygen introducing port 32 and deposited on the metallic thin film magnetic recording layer of the film 23 to form an oxide layer. The deposition preventive plate is arranged so that the opening part is positioned directly below the can.
