PURPOSE:To speed up the detecting process of a pattern position even when rough searching is executed by executing pattern recognition in a small area basing on a pattern recognizing position. CONSTITUTION:When the picture data of a field for one picture is stored in a memory 4 for the picture in a period K1, this is detected by an address designating section 7 and a taking-in completion signal b2 is sent out to a CPU 6. On receiving the taking-in signal b2, the CPU 6 opens a multiplexer 8 and sends out the picture data for one picture stored in a memory 4 to a pattern recognizing section 9. Thus, the recognizing section 9 executes the recognition of the pattern picture data from the picture data for one picture basing on the pattern recognizing position information obtained from the picture data of odd number field A, and detects the position. The pattern recognizing process is made in a period K2. Consequently, the pattern recognizing position information obtained by the final pattern recognition is transferred to the CPU 6.
