PURPOSE:To optimize the exchange of mandrel bars by calculating the total rolling length of the mandrel bar, determining the abrasion loss of the bar, comparing the same with the set reference abrasion loss for the exchange of the bar and outputting a command for the exchange. CONSTITUTION:An outlet side length measuring instrument 110 is provided to the outlet side of a mandrel mill 20 and a computer 170 contg. a calculator 120 for the abrasion loss of the bar and a judger 140 for the exchange of the bar, etc. is disposed. The computer 170 starts the judgment action when the mandrel bar 30 advances into 80 from conveying tables 60, 70 upon completion of rolling. The exchange judger 140 compares the abrasion loss tb of the bar 30 calculated by the outlet side length measuring instrument 110 and the calculator 120 and the reference abrasion loss tc and outputs the exchange of the bar 30 to an instructing device 180 when the result thereof exceeds a permissible value epsilon. The optimum exchange exactly corresponding to the wear of the bar is made possible by the above-mentioned method.
