PURPOSE:To facilitate the gradation conversion of a digital picture data and to change the gradation conversion characteristic more simply by using a RAM for gradation conversion storing a gradation conversion data in response to an address. CONSTITUTION:The gradation conversion RAM 5 inputs an inputted digital picture data 6 as an address and applies gradation conversion by its output data. When one line picture data are subjected to gradation conversion by the RAM 5 and stored in a RAM 3, the drive of a carriage (not shown) and a line feed motor is started and a print head starts the scanning. In applying conversion to the input data by an optional gradation conversion data, the gradation range of the input picture is matched to the gradation range reproduced by a printer.
