PURPOSE:To optimize the extent of heat deformation in a pad and improve a bearing characteristic, by detecting the thickness of an oil film with a surface part of the thrust pad supporting a rotor, and controlling a heater at the backside part. CONSTITUTION:With a turning shaft 1 rotated, a loss to be produced in an oil film 6 being formed between this turning shaft 1 and a thrust pad 2 makes temperature on a pad surface surface part go up whereby heat deformation is induced in this pad due to a temperature gradient in the thickness direction. Since it is so judged that the pad deformation is too much if oil film thickness on the pad surface part is small, the detection value of the oil film thickness detector 10 installed in the pad surface part is inputted into a controller 12, accelerating input of the heater installed in a pad backside part. If so, temperature on the pad backside goes up, therefore the temperature gradient in the thickness direction of the pad is relieved so that the pad heat deformation is checked. With this constitution, a bearing characteristic is improved, and its reliability is thus raisable.
