PURPOSE:To obtain ZrO2 with small energy consumption in a simple process, by heating a blended powder of zircon and with a carbonaceous material in an atmosphere containing sulfur gas or H2S gas, further heat-treating the powder in an inert gas atmosphere, oxidizing and firing the heat-treated powder. CONSTITUTION:Zircon sand powder is blended with a carbonaceous material powder and the resultant blend is heated in a gas atmosphere containing sulfur gas and/or H2S gas at 1,130-1,600 deg.C. The resultant solid powder after heating is further heat-treated at 1,130-1,600 deg.C in an inert gas atmosphere, e.g. Ar, etc. The residual powder after heat treatment is then oxidized and fired in air at, e.g. 800 deg.C. There are following advantage: The treatment can be carried out at a lower temperature than that in a conventional electrofusion method and SiS2 is formed as a by-product in high purity. The product ZrO2 is of high purity and obtained in a readily moldable powdery state.
