PURPOSE:To increase the S/N ratio as a signal representing the brightness ratio of detected area by a method wherein photoelectric converting parts and an auxiliary electrode are connected by an extension part of either one of the first or the second conductivity type layer. CONSTITUTION:When a photodetector is irradiated with light from a detected area such as a picture image from an insulating transparent substrate 11 side, such light, after penetrating the insulating transparent substrate 11, reaches photoelectric converting parts 15 and the first conductivity type layer 17 including the extension part of said photoelectric converting parts 15. Furthermore, carriers such as electrons.hole pairs corresponding to the intensity of said light are generated in the photoelectric converting parts 15. When the space between an auxiliary electrode 23 and the second electrode 25 in such a state is impressed with specified voltage to be an inverse bias, said carriers can be taken out as photoelectric current. Through these procedures, the brightness ratio of a detected area can be detected.
