PURPOSE:To discriminate whether information stored in a storage medium is updated information or not, by storing simultaneously the updated information in an updating code area provided on the storage medium, at the time of updating the information stored in the storage medium and storing it in the storage medium. CONSTITUTION:A storage operation is set by a keyboard 6, a retrieval code is supplied to a VTR storage device 23 through a CPU 50, and it is stored in a tape 20. On the other hand, an original is ready by a reading part 191, a video signal corresponding its various information is supplied to the device 23 through the CPU 50, and the video signal is stored in the tape 20. In such case, a retrieval code area A and an updating code area B for storing a retrieval code read by a reading part 192 and an updating code, respectively are formed successively on the tape 20, and also, a heading information area C and a main information area D are formed successively. An area AND is formed as one unit, and at every unit, a start code area S is formed. In such way, updated information can be discriminated.
