PURPOSE:To extremely easily perform optical axis adjustment, by grinding two surfaces contacting with each other, between which a lens is inserted and held, of a holder in parallel with the optical axis of the lens and brought into contact and sliding the two surfaces with and on reference surfaces provided on a base plate. CONSTITUTION:A holder 10 is worked with low accuracy of about 100mum and a lens or ferrule 11 is inserted into and fixed to the holder 10. Then the sections A of the two surfaces 10a and 10b brought into contact with each other of the holder 10, which are off from the optical axis of the lens or ferrule 11, are ground to a grinding reference surface 18 in parallel with the optical axis by using a rotating grinding wheel 16 and grinding jig 17. After grinding, the ground surfaces 10a and 10b are appropriately brought into contact with and slid on reference surfaces 12a and 12b previously provided on a base plate 12 and the optical axis is adjusted so that the best light-coupled state can be obtained. Therefore, optical axis adjustment of an optical device can be performed extremely easily and surely.
