PURPOSE:To manufacture high-purity zirconium by enriching zirconium with hydrogen in vacuum and then by carrying out electron beam melting so as to remove impurity elements such as oxygen, iron, etc., contained in zirconium. CONSTITUTION:Sheet-like zirconium is charged into a heated hydrogen furnace, and the inside of the hydrogen furnace is evacuated to a pressure of about 10<-4>torr substituted by nitrogen gas. Subsequently, the specimen is heated to about 600 deg.C, while hydrogen gas is being poured at a rate of about 4l/min, and held for several hours, and then the inside of the hydrogen furnace is substituted by nitrogen gas so as to incorporate hydrogen to the specimen by about 50-1,000ppm. Thence, this specimen is charged into a vacuum chamber, and the inside of the chamber is subjected to electron beam melting under a pressure of about 10<-4>-10<-5>torr. In this way, the high-purity zirconium from which impurity elements such as oxygen, iron, etc., contained in zirconium can be manufactured in high efficiency.
