PURPOSE:To provide higher stability of tension on an ink ribbon and higher aligned take-up of the ribbon, by applying a braking force to a side surface of an ink ribbon on the payout side in a ribbon cassette, and applying a torque braking force to an end face of a ribbon payout core. CONSTITUTION:A side surface of an ink ribbon 4 on the payout side is elastically pressed by a peripheral brake 10 comprising a felt 10b fitted to the tip of a leaf spring 10a. When the roll diameter of the ink ribbon 4 is reduced as a printer is used the braking force is reduced due to the decrease in the deflection of the spring 10a. To compensate for the reduction in the braking force, upper and lower end faces of a ribbon payout core 3 are pressed by core-pressing felts 12, thereby applying fixed torque braking forces to the end faces. By this, it is possible to uniformize the in-plane tension of the ink ribbon 4 and to applying a substantially constant back tension to the ribbon over the entire range of the ribbon take-up. It is thus possible to effectively prevent the ink ribbon 4 from being raised.
