PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of erroneous recognition, by a method wherein, in a furnace having a plurality of burners, a flame area formed by a burner, ignition of which is discriminated, is divided into a plurality of parts by an image sensor to grasp it, and from luminance distribution at each section, ignition and a flame failure are discriminated. CONSTITUTION:Flame is inputted to an image sensor 4 through lenses 1a an 1b, a light guide 2, and an image fiber 3. The flame is detected as a luminance level signal divided into a plurality of picture elements, for example, 50X50=2500 to output its result to a burner-to-be-detected area set part 5a. A burner-to-be-detected area is set, luminance level distribution is detected by a luminance level distribution detecting part 5b and an average luminance level is detected by an average luminance level detecting part 5c. Results of detection are inputted to a decision logic 5d to decide ON or OFF of flame. This constitution enables improvement of decision.
