PURPOSE:To aim at the most suitable quantity of air flowing into an auxiliary combustion chamber and the most suitable strength of eddy current by making the sectional area of an opening variable by a process of sliding an auxiliary combustion chamber member in response to an engine load and an engine speed. CONSTITUTION:An auxiliary combustion chamber member 5 is to be composed of a ceramic material or a heat resisting alloy material. A connecting hole 11 is to be provided to connect an auxiliary combustion chamber 9 to a main combustion chamber 2 while interposing a sheet 13 made of a ceramic material to support the auxiliary combustion chamber member 5. Now, detecting the accelerator opening degree, etc., in response to an engine load and an engine speed, the auxiliary combustion chamber member 5 is driven by rotating a rotary axis 14 to enlarge the opening sectional area of the nozzle hole 10 of the auxiliary combustion chamber 9, when the accelerator opening degree, etc., is detected to be bigger than the fixed value. By this method, a good start can be attained in cold start or the like because a quantity of air flowing into the auxiliary combustion chamber 9 can be lessened and the eddy current strength of high pressure air can be controlled. On the other hand, after starting, the engine can be placed in the best combusting condition in response to various engine conditions as an increased quantity of air flows into the auxiliary combustion chamber 9.
