PURPOSE:To protect a mechanical-type supercharger effectively in a low speed gear running, by controlling the supercharging pressure with the mechanical-type supercharger lower as the transmission is at the lower speed side. CONSTITUTION:To a control circuit 29, not only the detected values of an air flow meter 11, a throttle opening sensor 30, and a pressure sensor 31 furnished at a surge tank 13, but also the rotation frequency, the cooling water temperature, the transmission position, the ON, OFF of an autocruise switch, and the like are input. Depending on those detected values, the control circuit 29 controls a fuel injection valve 16, and also controls the supercharging pressure through an electromagnetic clutch 6 and a relief valve 19. That is to say, the supercharging pressure to be set from the rotation frequency and the throttle opening is computed, and when the supercharging pressure detected by the pressure sensor 31 exceeds the computed value, the relief valve 19 is opened to control the supercharging pressure. And the set supercharging pressure is set lower as the transmission position is at the lower speed.
