PURPOSE:To enable high precision finish to be applied to the shape and surface roughness of a brittle material in a turning process for obtaining the curved surface thereof by forming a conical shape on the cutting face of a diamond tip having a cutting edge of circular arc, and a negative angle at all cutting points. CONSTITUTION:In turning a curved surface, the cutting face A of a cutting tool is required to have a conical shape in order to keep a rake angle (theta) at a negative and constant angle in a circular cutting edge C and all cutting points. When a brittle material is turned to have a curved shape, using a diamond tip, 1a, therefore, the rake angle (theta) at all cutting points A becomes negative due to the conical shape of the cutting face A, thereby enabling the machining surface of a workpiece 3 to be finished with high precision in respect of both configuration accuracy and roughness. Consequently, it becomes possible to turn a brittle material such as Ge, ZnS and Si with high precision.
