PURPOSE:To attain the retrieval of a picture without using a management code but with using a collating picture by providing a comparison operation part comparing the most significant bit-plane in a multi-gradation picture in a collating picture and a picture to be retrieved, and addition part and a threshold detection part. CONSTITUTION:The comparison operation part 3 compares the most significant bit- plane of the collating picture in the multi-gradation picture which has been recorded in a frame memory 1 and that of the multi-gradation picture which has been recorded in a recorder 2 in an all picture area or in a designated picture area in the unit of a picture element. When they coincide with each other as a result, '0' is outputted to the addition part 4 and accumulated and added, and in the case of discrepancy, '1' is. They are outputted to the threshold detection part 5. It compares the output of the addition part 4 and a previously set threshold. When the output of the addition part 4 exceeds the threshold, comparison is interrupted and the preceding picture for retrieval is read from the device 2. When the output of the addition part 4 does not exceed the threshold in the case of termination of comparison, it is judged to be the similar picture of the collating picture and a picture number or the like are recorded. Thus, the retrieval of the picture can be executed without using the control code but with the collating picture.
