PURPOSE:To always obtain a highest output power by using a turbo-charger and a supercharger, overlappingly with each other during transition of operation of an engine, and by stopping only the supercharger when the torque of the engine exceeds a predetermined value. CONSTITUTION:A turbo-charger 7 and a supercharger 8 are laid in an intake-air passage 3 of an engine 1 in that order from the upstream side thereof. In this arrangement, a means for detecting the torque of the engine 1 is composed of an air-flowmeter 56 and a crank angle sensor 57, and detection signals therefrom are delivered to a control unit 55. Further, the control unit 55 discriminates a predetermined operating condition, and delivers control signals to a solenoid 54 in a three-way selector valve 48 and an electromagnetic clutch 22 in accordance with the result of the discrimination. At this time both chargers are overlappingly used during transition of operation of the engine, and when the torque of the engine exceeds a predetermined value, only the supercharger 8 is stopped.
