PURPOSE:To attain positive picture recording and negative picture recording by storing once a picture signal in the unit of scanning lines and reading the picture in the order in matching with the scanning direction of the titled recorder without modifying the recording mechanism. CONSTITUTION:A write/read switch section 13 brings a line memory 11 to the write state while receiving a phase signal representing a section of a scanning line. The line memory 11 writes a picture signal corresponding to the (i-1)th scanning line in the order of picture element signals P1-P10 according to a write address from a write counter 2. Then a switch section 13 receiving the next phase signal switches the line memory 1 in the read state and switches the line memory 12 in the write state, and the line memory 12 writes the picture signal the same as above. On the other hand, a read control section 5 instructs an Up or a Down count to the read counter 4 to instruct the read of the positive or negative picture recording. Similarly, the (i)th and (i+1)th picture signals are subjected to write/readout.
