PURPOSE:To reduce a loss time due to the generation of a communication error by setting a scheduled time till the reception of a signal returned in response to a transmission signal from the transmission of the said signal to each electronic cashe register (ECR) depending on the content of transmission at an optimum time in advance. CONSTITUTION:In sending a signal, a communication processing section 2 sets a transmission signal in a work register 13. Then a timeout table 14 is retrieved to obtain predetermined timeout data corresponding to the transmission signal. When the timeout data is obtained, it is set to a timer circuit 7 and the transmission signal set to the work register 13 is sent to a transmission line 1 via a communication interface 6. Then the timer circuit 7 is started as soon as the transmission signal is sent and the state reaches the standby state. When a signal in response to the transmission signal is sent, the communication interface 6 receives the response signal to send a reception interruption signal to a CPU 4.
