PURPOSE: To realize a highly reliable chiller where a piston does not collide against a cylinder by supporting the piston with a relatively rigid supporting spring having a specific spring constant thereby keeping a substantially constant central position of the piston regardless of the direction of gravity or external acceleration. CONSTITUTION: Fixed central position of a piston 2 is ensured by a supporting spring 29 having sprint constant k>(2×m)/Smax (where, k: spring constant at the supporting spring (kgf/mm), m: total mass of an assembly (piston, reciprocal part of linear motor (kg), Smax: maximum allowable stroke of piston (mm)). The supporting spring 29 is locked at the opposite ends in order to prevent lateral shift and arranged around first and second protrusions 30, 31. A resilient member 32 comprising a relatively rigid coil spring is disposed on the underside of a free displacer 3 in order to limit stroke thereof.
