PURPOSE:To produce a long-life rolling bearing by incorporating a carbide forming element into a bearing ring and a rolling element and specifying the amount of retained austenite in the rolling surface layer and the average grain size of carbide, etc., respectively. CONSTITUTION:In a rolling bearing having a bearing ring and a rolling element, a carbide forming element (Cr is preferred and its content is 1-3wt.%) is incorporated into at least either of the bearing ring and the rolling element. Further, hardening temp. and hardening method are selected and the amount of retained austenite (gammaRvol.%) in the rolling surface layer is regulated to 20-25vol.%, and, by means of the dispersion strengthening of fine carbide or carbonitride of 0.5-1.5mu average grain size, the relationship between rolling surface hardness (Hv) and the amount of retained austenite (gammaRvol.%) satisfies -4.7X(gammaRvol.%) +920<=Hv<=-4.7X(gammaRvol.%)+1020. By this method, the rolling bearing having long service life under clean lubrication as well as under foreign matter contaminated lubrication can be obtained.
