PURPOSE:To control the orienting power of a liquid crystal film by mixing photosensitive material and nonphotosensitive material to form a LB film, exposing this film to light and then selectively dissolving either reacted phtosensitive molecules or unreacted photosensitive molecules. CONSTITUTION:On a substrate 5, there is formed an oriented monomolecular film (LB film) 6 of polymer material comprising a homogeneous mixture of photosensitive material and non-photosensitive material. When this LB film 6 is exposed to light, the photosensitive polymer reacts with light and changes its properties. By developing the LB film 6 exposed to excimer laser light in a 1:1 soln. of dimethylacetoamide and ethanol, at least part of the photosensitive polyimide is removed. A pair of these substrates 5 thus formed are used to interpose nematic liquid crystal to form a liquid crystal cell. A liquid crystal cell exposed to light and a liquid crystal cell not exposed to light are prepared to measure the optical responsibility and contrast of the liquid crystal elements, by which the orienting power of the LB film 6 can be controlled and liquid crystal cells of different orientation can be obtd.
