The claim concerns an unshapen, fire-resistant casting material contg. a fire-resistant aggregate of principally MgO-Al2O3 spinel together with Al2O3, silicon carbide, carbon and binder. Silicon carbide is present at a concn. of 5-20 wt.% and as particles of min. dia. 30 microns. Carbon is also present at a concn. of 5-20 wt.%, particle size max. 2 mm, and undergoes treatment to become more hydrophilic in nature. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used as a lining material for pouring spouts in e.g. tapping of pig iron from a furnace. Shows improved corrosion-resistance against molten metal and slag due to control of particle size and concn. of silicon carbide and the introduction of specialised carbon in specific quantities. |
