The invention relates to a process for the plain or metal-effect finishing (coating, painting) of plastic substrates comprising up to 100% by weight of polypropylene using base coats containing coloured pigments and/or metal-effect pigments. The base coats give good adhesion to the plastics. The base coats used contain 5.0-35% by weight of water-fillable (water dilutable) binders based on physically drying synthetic resin dispersions 0.5-15% by weight of a chlorinated polyolefin having a chlorine content of 5-70% by weight, 0.2-20% by weight of one or more pigments, 30-89% by weight of water and 5.0-40% by weight of organic solvents.
